THIS UPDATE IS IN RED the previous one still works but this method is a lot easier and a lot smoother.
Just installed a new Ati Sapphire 4890 1Gb to my First generation mac pro. Looks & feels are awesome. Here is how i did it (its with pictures for you lazy people out there!)
UPDATED VERSION FOR USE WITH SNOW LEOPARD
(updates are in green)
First
Download this! Sapphire ATI 4890 Injector
Here is everything i got out of the box
Then once thats done Turn off your computer and plug your 4890 into the second slot like so
Now you’ll notice that there are x2 female 6pin power inputs on the 4890 and you have only x1 6pin connection wire. At this point you can/SHOULD use the 6pin-molex wire sapphire gives you and connect that to the superdrive molex power output cables.
or you can just get a molex splitter and continue using your superdrive…
Then once thats done, boot. Now on my mac i got a warning at startup saying that my graphics card isn’t working %100, don’t fret, its because its in slot 2. Slot 2 is slower than slot 1. thats why its there (ill use this quite often refer to it as; T.W.I.T.)
now open up your Ati4890.zip and install
- ATI_init.pkg
then
- kexthelper
then
- accel.tar.bz (drag-drop the file and type in your computer administrator password and press EASY INSTALL)
then
- reboot your computer
then
- Remove old Graphics card from slot 1 and change 4890′s place with it. then install QE_CL_Exotic_cards.pkg.
If you have 1.5.8 or 1.6.0 you should download this and install it, reboot.
Now you need an extra one of these 6pin-6pin connector to connect the second power outlet to your 4890 and you can buy this. However i just use it with the superdrives and sold my superdrive for 40$ since i dont use cd’s anymore. i tucked the power outlets to the superdrive through the tiny opening that diverts all the cables downward (use force if necessary but be careful )and just plugged them with the molex-6pin adapters sapphire gave me because TWIT.
Apparently I was wrong. That said molex cable output does not supply the right amount of power for
the video card. This will damage your video card in the long run so don’t try it.
I bought the 6pin-6pin connector and got another superdrive for Snow Leopard purposes (although
you can do it WITHOUT the cd)
Thanks to Cindori, hardmac and Netkas for all their help and development of this injector
keep coming back!
